Bodega Garzón Estate, Cabernet Franc/Tannat
VEGAN / SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED / MALDONADO, URUGUAY / NEW WORLD WINERY OF THE YEAR
This vibrant blend is packed with aromas redolent of ripe plums, sweet spices and hints of green pepper. Fresh and round on the palate, this is a very pleasant, food-friendly wine.
'Very dark cherry red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas that remind me more of Cabernet Sauvignon than of Cabernet Franc though there is a nice little leafy/herbal edge. Smooth but dry texture which counterbalances the fruit sweetness, very fine-grained tannins. The tannins build to become more chewy and this definitely needs food or a bit longer in the bottle. The tannin texture is lovely, with none of the thickness that I associate with oak ageing.' Jancis Robinson 16/20
We first tasted the Bodega Garzón wines at the Liberty Wines portfolio tasting in January. Not surprisingly, they were at the end of the Argentine table and after a dozen heavy, oaky Malbecs they were a revelation. Perfectly balanced, they were like fine Clarets compared with the proceeding Mendoza blockbusters. The whites are equally good, if not better.
