Bodega Garzón Estate, Tannat / Merlot
VEGAN / SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED / MALDONADO, URUGUAY / NEW WORLD WINERY OF THE YEAR
This blend is plush and juicy with predominantly red fruit aromas, this wine is well balanced, medium bodied, and filled with layers of flavour and soft tannins. A touch of peppery spice and dark-roasted coffee bean comes through on the finish.
Deep crimson. Spicy, slightly earthy dark fruit but there's lots of fruit here – and perfectly balanced by notable acidity and firm, ripe, nicely dry tannins. Perhaps a little bit too well structured at the moment to be drunk without food but it is incredibly moreish and satisfying with a more savoury but still fruity aftertaste. A very good, vibrant all-rounder. The tech sheet says there is some residual sugar (3.9 g/l) but it tastes dry. (Julia Harding on Jancis Robinson 16/20)
We first tasted the Bodega Garzón wines at the Liberty Wines portfolio tasting in January. Not surprisingly, they were at the end of the Argentine table and after a dozen heavy, oaky Malbecs they were a revelation. Perfectly balanced, they were like fine Clarets compared with the proceeding Mendoza blockbusters. The whites are equally good, if not better.
