Wine Club Boxes ‘Round Spain on a student rail pass’
A case of Spanish reds. So much has changed since Spanish wine was Rioja or tetrapaked Don Simon with good quality and affordable bottles from all corners of the Iberian peninsular. The one thing they have in common is an affinity with the barbecue.
Finca Fabian Tempranillo; it’s been our best-selling red for years, with good reason. An extremely well made, medium bodied, unoaked red wine, “Finca Fabián Tempranillo is produced on the Dominio di Punctum estate from organically grown grapes. Night harvested and cold macerated before fermenting. Serve at 16ºC. For a great combination, try this wine with a chicken paella or beef ribs. Nice cherry colour with a violet shade. Red berries and cherry bouquet on the nose. Fresh and harmonious on the palate with long finish.”
Bodegas Albero, Doblez Garnacha, from the same Punctum stable, on the mesa, an hour south east of Madrid, is a real fruit bomb of cherry and summer fruit flavours with sweet tannins and a long finish. It’s a great wine for the summer and we prefer it slightly chilled (12-14ﹾC).
Bodegas Castano Monastrell DO Yecla. Yecla and Jumilla, in Murcia in the south east, have made Monastrell (Mouvedre in France) their own. Deep ruby red in colour. On the nose, there are rich notes of black cherries, plums and an elegant mineral touch. On the palate, this it’s smooth with velvety tannins and a long finish, bursting with fruit – perfect for the barbecue.
Piqueras ‘Old vine’ Garnacha; Also from the South East, although a relatively new addition, the ‘Piqueras’ label is fast becoming well known for reliable high quality and great value. The older Garnacha vines here (45-60 years) provide oodles of velvety black cherry, damson and spice flavours, with hints of vanilla oak. A big and robust wine, again, ideal for the barbecue.
Herencia Altes Cupatge, DO Terra Alta; Syrah, Garnatxa Negra and Cariñena blend. “The nerve of the cariñena, the sweetness of the garnacha and the strength of syrah are combined to draw a wine full of ripe black fruit, such as blackberries and plums. Balance and harmony in the mouth, with a good concentration and measured texture. Fruit tannin, ripe and kind. Very juicy.”
Navardia Rioja Joven; It might be young and unoaked but it still has enough body to stand up to most meat dishes and enough sweet fruit to complement barbecued meat and vegetables.
