Wine Club Boxes "A Taste of Portugal"
Portuguese wine has seen a rapid rise in popularity over the last 12 months and we have put together this delicious taster case to showcase the diversity and value that the country has to offer!
Many consumers are baffled by less familiar grape names and regions, but we guarantee the leap of faith is well rewarded. We like to compare the Douro to Bordeaux, with its full-bodied, structured reds; the Dao like the aromatic spicy Syrah of the Northern Rhone; and the Alentejo akin to the Languedoc, or New World with its fruit-driven, juicy yet still structured styles. The Vinho Verde will appeal to our Sauvignon fans and the Rose is perfect for sipping in the garden and pretending you are on a sunny beach in the Algarve! These wines can all boast the pedigree of Portugal’s most famous winemaking stable, a company called Sogrape, famous for the legendary Mateus Rose and Sandeman Port. The company, owned by the Guedes family, are committed to preserving the integrity of the land, farming according to sustainable methods and organically wherever possible.
Planalto Douro Branco 2018, Casa Ferreirinha
Portugal’s most popular Douro white wine and it is easy to see why. Vinified from grapes grown at high altitude (Planalto translates as “High Plains”) to retain freshness and delicacy in this hot region, this is a deliciously vibrant wine boasting ripe citrus and floral aromas, with a fresh dry finish.
Azevedo Vinho Verde Loureiro/Alvarinho 2019
A wonderfully fresh Loureiro and Alvarinho blend from the heart of Vinho Verde boasting aromas of ripe citrus fruit, nectarine and freshly cut apple. Refreshing on the palate with aromatic citrus notes and a lively acidity. This wine has a balanced and crisp finish.
Papa Figos Douro Branco 2017, Casa Ferreirinha
Truly modern example of Douro white wine which showcases the fresh, vibrant fruit and fine, balanced structure that can be achieved with careful grape selection from some of the high-altitude vineyards in the region. It has prominent floral notes, citrus and stone fruit aromas and the finish is crisp and elegant.
Sossego Vinho Regional Alentejano Rosé 2018, Herdade do Peso
'Sossego' translates as 'tranquillity' and evokes the peaceful Alentejo countryside where this wine originates. A deliciously fruity rosé with fragrant red berry notes and a lovely zippy acidity, this wine is dry, lively and balanced in the mouth with a lovely fresh finish.
Trinca Bolotas Alentejo Tinto 2018, Herdade do Peso
This wine takes its name from the Iberian black pig found across the Alentejo region and means ‘Acorn Muncher’! A robust, black fruit flavoured wine with a gamey edge, it is a perfect companion to “petiscos” or a good steak.
Papa Figos Douro Tinto 2018, Casa Ferreirinha
Careful grape selection from some of the finest vineyards in the region has created fresh, vibrant fruit and a fine, balanced structure. Intensely aromatic with fresh black fruits, red berries, heather, chocolate and balsamic savoury spice on the nose. The previous vintage won the Best Portuguese Red Trophy at last year’s International Wine Challenge.
